Former OU student killed in River Park shooting Thursday night

An Athens man has been charged with murder after an overnight investigation.

An Ohio University student and Athens resident has been charged with murder after the Athens Police Department responded to a reported robbery Thursday night at River Park Towers.

The victim has been identified as Markel Morrison, age 22, a former OU student from Cincinnati.

After an overnight investigation, John Michael Fults-Ganey, age 21, has been charged with murder and complicity to aggravated burglary. He was set to appear in Athens County Municipal Court today at 9:30 a.m, according to a news release from the Athens Police Department.

Fults-Ganey was an OU student at the time of the incident but has since been suspended, said Carly Glick, senior director of Communications Services at OU.

According to the police report, Morrison was found unconscious with a severe laceration and possible internal injury.

According to court records from the Butler County Court of Common Pleas, Morrison pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated trafficking of drugs in January 2014.

APD Chief Tom Pyle stated in the release that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

"This is a very complex incident that will require much time to fully investigate,” he said in the release.

The Ohio University Police Department is assisting APD with the matter, according to a statement from OUPD Lt. Tim Ryan. The department does not consider the incident a threat to the community, according to the release.

“All of the information gathered suggests that this was an isolated incident,” Ryan said in the release.
