A disappointing Mid-American Conference Tournament ended the Bobcats' season.
Ohio finished last out of six teams, and will not be represented at the NCAA Tournament.
The Bobcats scored a total of 15.5 points. Central Michigan won with 111.5 points. The Chippewas had four MAC champions, 10 wrestlers in the top three, and earned eight automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
Ohio finished third in the MAC in the regular season, but some of the key wrestlers who helped win matches were not able to wrestle in the tournament.
Jacob Ison (174 pounds) was unable to wrestle because of a hamstring injury. Tommy Weinkam (165 pounds) didn't find out he wouldn't be able to wrestle at the tournament until last Thursday.
That takes some of the wind out of guys' sails
coach Joel Greenlee said. They think 'Oh now we're screwed.'
Greenlee said with the exception of Andy Hartshorn (285 pounds) - who won his opening match - nobody pulled any upsets.
If you're going to be good you have to win matches that you aren't supposed to win
Greenlee said.
The highest placer for Ohio was Clay Tucker (157 pounds). He advanced to the championship bout after a first-round bye and a 5-2 decision over Joshua Moulton of Eastern Michigan.
In the championship, Tucker faced Bryan Deutsch of Northern Illinois. Deutsch pulled out the win 12-7.
Nobody did what they were expected to do
Tucker said.
He then faced Tyler Grayson in the consolation match, but Tucker said he wasn't ready to wrestle after losing the championship. He lost 5-2.
I was in the locker room
upset about my last match
Tucker said. Then coach comes in and says
'you have to wrestle in a few minutes.'
It's not something you want to do after you lose in the finals.
Tucker's loss meant that no Bobcats would receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last year
Germane Lindsey (141 pounds) was the only Bobcat to qualify for the national tournament.
Maybe, some people would say we didn't peak at the right time, Lindsey said.
Lindsey said that injuries prevented the season from panning out the way he had hoped.
It's one thing to be injured and it's another thing to be hurt, Lindsey said. I think a lot of our guys were actually injured. They couldn't go out there and perform like they wanted to.",",2,Sports,Joe Ragazzo,27452b.jpg,",",",",","
