Council officials 'appalled' by violence during Palmerfest

City Councilman Kent Butler's immediate reaction to the near riot that took place Saturday at Palmerfest reflected the council's general reaction to the incident.

I was appalled

he, D-1st ward, said. I made some bad decisions in college but I wasn't throwing beer cans at police and firemen.

Councilwoman Chris Fahl, D-4th ward, lives on Morris Avenue, about a block north from Palmer Street. She said she could hear loud music at 7:15 a.m. and that much of it was inappropriate for children.

This was not the first time an Athens street fest has gotten out of hand.

Councilwoman Nancy Bain, D-3rd ward, has lived in Athens for more than 30 years and said she has seen street fests turn violent before.

I go back to the 1970s. We had some really bad times she said.

But I've never seen people attack horses

Bain added.

Mayor Paul Wiehl met with the Athens Police Department yesterday to discuss how to prevent future disturbances.

When asked whether the city's new effort to move old couches off porches had any effect on the incident, he said, No ... even if you take all the old couches on porches away

that doesn't stop the person with the funky couch in the living room.
