He’s acted, he’s produced and he’s driven racecars, and this Thursday, Frankie Muniz will show Ohio University students his musical side.
Muniz will perform as the drummer for indie pop rockers Kingsfoil at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Baker Student Lounge.
Muniz became the drummer for Kingsfoil earlier this year, and though the band has played at OU three times — most recently in February as part of the Emerging Artist Series, for which it is returning — this will be the Malcolm in the Middle star’s first time in Athens.
Kingsfoil front man Jordan Davis said he’s looking forward to his Athens return.
“We’ve been really lucky to make some cool friends there,” he said. “When we came back, we got to see people we saw the first time who had since learned our songs and became fans.”
The band’s latest album — titled A Beating Heart is a Bleeding Heart — was released at midnight Tuesday. Among the 12 tracks is the first single off the album, “What Your Mother Taught You,” which can be heard on the band’s website.
“We all got a lot better at writing and figuring out where we come from musically,” Davis said about the new album. “Our arranging of music got better. … It’s definitely the most excited I’ve been about an album. It’s very near and dear to me and definitely a step up from our last album.”
The album, Davis said, is not a concept one but rather a collection of songs the band thought would work well and sell on their own if they were from different albums.
Kingsfoil doesn’t stick to one-way tracks when it comes to writing and arranging music, Davis added.
“A lot of indie bands try hard to be different for the sake of being different,” he said. “Sometimes that’s cool and it works, but we try and come from writing a song that speaks to the audience regardless of what genre it’s from. We try and start with a great song and go from there.”
Davis noted that while the group always likes to make people have fun and dance, the biggest connection between the band and the audience is the lyrics.
Kingsfoil is currently on tour spanning from Pennsylvania to California, but fans can catch the band on the first floor of Baker Thursday evening.
“We just can’t wait to get out there again and see everybody,” Davis said.
