Just as the memory of slipping around on ice during Dads Weekend begins to fade from fathers’ minds, they’ll have the opportunity to trek back to Athens — this time accompanied by fairer weather and their wives.
Winter Parents Weekend events include Open Stage with Bruce Dalzell, special tours of the Kennedy Museum of Art, and special recreational swimming and ice skating.
“While I would say it may not be as robust as Dads or Sibs weekends, I think it’s still a great opportunity for parents who want to come in the winter time,” said Chad Barnhardt, coordinator of Parent Outreach and Special Projects.
Students and parents can start the weekend off Friday night with a jolt of caffeine and music at The Front Room with local musician and songwriter Bruce Dalzell. Known for his delicate and meaningful folk music, Dalzell has been performing at Ohio University for 22 years.
“I invite students to bring their family members to watch some local folk tunes and support the local music scene,” Dalzell said.
Those searching for visual rather than tonal art can view local artwork produced by OU faculty within walking distance from campus. On Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., The Kennedy Museum of Art, located at The Ridges, will host Parents Weekend tours starting every half hour.
“We encourage students to bring their parents to the show because this is one of our biggest exhibitions that resemble the talent of the faculty,” said Sally Delgado, museum curator.
Both the Aquatic Center and Bird Arena will offer families the opportunity to get some physical activity in with recreational swimming and skating hours.
“This open swim is really catered towards parents and students who may not be able to go Uptown or might want to explore some other events,” said Ali Cody, student facility operator of Parents Weekend at the Aquatics Center. “It’s something different to do here this weekend.”
For students and parents who enjoy rocking out to the classics and supporting a worthy cause, Backwords will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Smiling Skull Saloon, 108 W. Union St.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Athens Area Vietnam Vets Scholarship fund, which provides scholarships to sons, daughters and grandchildren of Vietnam veterans.
“We really look forward to seeing parents and students,” said Lou Horvath, a member of Backwords and a Vietnam veteran. “It’s a great cause and you can dance to a rock ’n’ roll band.”
