The Athens Police Department arrested one man for allegedly robbing two people early Saturday morning, while the other suspect remains at large.
Anthony T. Young, 18, of Athens, was arrested and charged with robbery, a second-degree felony.
At 3:42 a.m., Athens Police received a complaint of a strong-armed robbery. The male victim reported that Young and another man approached him while he was walking on West State Street near the cemetery. The two men assaulted him and then took his wallet and cell phone, according to a release from the department.
Athens Police officers found both suspects shortly after the crime was reported, but the suspects fled when the officers approached. Officer Destry Flick apprehended Young and took him to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail where he still is being held. The other suspect is still at large.
Another male victim also reported that two men assaulted and robbed him while walking behind Athens Middle School. Considering the close locations of the crimes, time occurred and similar actions, Chief Tom Pyle wrote in a release that he believes this robbery may have involved the same suspects.
Though the victim had been knocked unconscious and could not report the crime immediately, the department believes the crime happened about 45 minutes before the other.
Robbery is a second-degree felony. Young could spend a maximum of eight years in prison and pay a maximum fine of $15,000 if convicted, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
