Fish N' Stuff offers quality, variety to Athens residents

The Fish N' Stuff pet store, 4 Station St., began as a hobby for two teenage brothers interested in fish and pets.

The brothers' parents bought a small store then on East State Street while the brothers were in high school.

After graduating college, one brother, Michael Savage, bought the store from his parents.

Now 24 years later, the pet store has moved to a larger location and still sells fish, pets and supplies.

While most students are familiar with Petland, 977 E. State St., Fish N' Stuff offers an alternative for purchasing pets and pet supplies.

Savage said he is confident his customers will continue to purchase their pet supplies from his store.

We've been here awhile and (the customers) know us

he said.

Savage added he tries to set his store apart by providing quality pets and products.

We work really hard to sell a variety of only healthy fish he said, adding that some of the more popular fish are tetras, a multi-colored schooling fish.

Fish N' Stuff sells both freshwater and saltwater fish and everything a fish may need, like aquariums, filtration, live aquatic plants and fish food, Savage said.

We really specialize in fish and fish products so we can serve people looking for those items he said.

The pet store sells small and larger aquariums up to 125 gallons, but can make special orders if customers want a larger or unusual shaped aquarium, he said.

In addition to fish, the store sells reptiles and pocket pets like hamsters, mice and guinea pigs, he said.

Some of their reptiles for sale include lizards, frogs, geckos and snakes as well as crickets for reptile food.

Currently, Savage said he has no plans to renovate or make any additions to the store.

We're just happy to be here and provide a personal service

Savage said.
