Wednesday, Ohio University’s Creative Writing Department in the Department of English, is sponsoring its Spring Literary Festival.

The festival, which began in 1986, is an annual event that brings writers and speakers to campus to discuss their works.

"We're excited about our lineup this year,” said Dave Wanczyk, the festival’s coordinator. “The best thing about Lit Fest is the chance to hear prolific and talented writers read and teach, but also to witness them learning from each other."

This year’s festival includes nonfiction writer Diane Ackerman, fiction writers Robert Olen Butler and Bonnie Jo Campbell and poets Sarah Lindsay and Dean Young.

In addition to speaking about past works, some writers even share ideas, which Wanczyk said is an exciting aspect of the festival.

"The writers build off each other's points in front of us in real time,” he said.” As an audience member, I feel like I'm seeing writers develop the theories that might just inform their next projects, and that's exciting. We get a little preview of what we'll be seeing on the page next year."

Wanczyk said he hopes that the festival will be a catalyst for inspiration in not only the writers, but also for students and community members.

"Listening to these writers just makes me want to write,” he said. “And that's what we hope students and community members feel too."
