At Ohio University’s first Student Senate meeting of the year, the legislative body’s new members will begin preparations for greater student involvement in senate’s “Student Speakout” and a possible book exchange program agreement.
After the senators votes to appoint new members, they will listen to several presentations, Student Senate President Kyle Triplett said.
Jim Schaus, director of Athletics, will speak about senate’s involvement with Ohio Athletics.
Senate’s current attempts to partner with Athletics have allowed members to go on the football field during halftime and recognize a student organization leader at each home game.
Representatives from OU’s Campus Involvement Center will discuss this year’s fall lineup, which includes plays and music performances from names such as Mike Posner and O.A.R.
Ryan Verner, a 2010 OU alumnus, will speak at tonight’s meeting about FourYears.com, a website he created that offers a book exchange service to OU students. He will discuss the possibility of merging his website with senate’s book exchange program.
“I don’t care if (students) use our book exchange; I just want students to get the most savings,” Triplett said.
He added that the current book exchange program isn’t being used enough and that he would like see that change.
Finally, Thomas Raabe, senate’s off-campus life commissioner, will present details of the upcoming Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, which will encourage men to walk down Court Street in high heels to increase sexual assault awareness. The event will be at noon Oct. 1, and the walk will begin at Baker University Center.
Triplett said he hopes to improve student programming this year, provide affordability for students with services such as the book exchange and involve the student body more with events like the “Student Speakout” at each meeting.
“There is time on our agenda to be set aside for them,” Triplett said.
