An Ohio University student who died last week in a skateboarding accident donated at least five organs.
David Spyke, 20, was a rising junior studying biological sciences and a registered organ donor. He was known for loving the earth and as a fraternity member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
"It’s his heroic act that could have possibly saved lives,” said Jenny Hall-Jones, OU dean of students.
Spyke died May 13 in Cincinnati after suffering from a head injury from falling while skateboarding, according to an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Spyke’s parents will know within six weeks who received his organs.
A memorial service with about 45 people in attendance was held at Hillel on May 18 for Spyke, who was a single child.
When an OU student dies, a flag of a Bobcat is flown over Cutler Hall. The flag that flew in Spyke’s memory was given to his parents by Hall-Jones at the service.
