University Program Council's latest event had Ohio University students going bananas yesterday.
A line stretched along Baker University Center's second floor as students waited to indulge in UPC's Banana Day. UPC provided banana bread, banana splits and fruit punch starting at 4 p.m., but students began lining up half an hour beforehand for the free treats.
It's the continuation of a program started last quarter with Apple Day Oct. 16, where students lined up for free candy apples, said event organizer senior Mandy Hohler, UPC's special events executive co-chair.
Apple Day was surprisingly popular
Hohler said. We thought it was funny that it was the most popular event.
Hohler said the success of Apple Day prompted another such event. Ohio University Catering provided banana splits and bread. The caterers hauled more than 300 bananas into Baker Center, Hohler said.
It's fun and random and it's free she said.
UPC puts on a variety of events for OU students throughout the year and is made up of a volunteer board of students, according to its website.
UPC is funded through the Student Activities Commission (SAC) and had taken a budget reduction from $98,000 last academic year to $73,333 this year.
Students were enticed by Banana Day, including sophomore Derek Miller, who is studying physics and math. Miller was the first student in line when Banana Day opened.
It's awesome. It's a cool idea especially if you like bananas. Miller said.
Sophomore Paul Barina, who is studying industrial systems engineering, agreed.
Hohler said UPC hopes to dedicate another day to a fruit next quarter but said it is unsure which it will be.
You can't really 'make your own snack' with oranges
Hohler said.
Miller said the next event should focus on serving pies for Pi day March 14, but Barina disagreed.
They need to have a strawberry day
Barina said. Everyone likes strawberries.
