Elizabeth Sayrs appointed new dean of University College

University College will be operating under a new dean by the end of the month.

Elizabeth Sayrs, an associate professor of music theory, will serve as dean of the college and vice provost for undergraduate education starting June 25

, replacing David Descutner. Descutner retired from the position earlier this year, according to an email sent out by Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit Thursday.

“It has been exciting to see David and his team build University College into a source of pride and prestige for excellence in advising and for numerous innovative programs,” Benoit said in the email.

Sayrs' salary will be $125,000.

University College accepts incoming freshmen who have not yet picked a major and is based in Chubb Hall. Under Descutner's leadership, it focused on assisting undergraduates throughout their college experience.

"I'm honored to join the outstanding group of people in University College," Sayrs said in an email to The Post. "I am very fortunate to follow Dean Descutner and to have the opportunity to continue the work that he and his colleagues have done to further Ohio's tradition of excellence in undergraduate education."

Benoit added that there was a “strong pool of candidates for this important position,” though it was Sayrs’ “record as a gifted teacher” and leader during her time at OU that impressed Benoit.

Sayrs served as the chair of Faculty Senate during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years. She joined the OU faculty in 2004.
