Some may see the opinion page of a newspaper as a place where people who write for newspapers get on their soapboxes and try to tell people what to think. Others may see it as the domain of only the most politically active. Still others might think it a waste of time.
I want you, for a second, to put aside those schools of thought and let me tell you about my day.
Walking around campus today, I have heard at least three different languages spoken. I have seen people of various ethnicities and religions. I have seen people in tie-dye shirts, long skirts, saris and business suits. I have come across people both older than I and younger, and I have met people who come from across the United States and around the world.
We are fortunate to have so many different people living and working around us. The most amazing thing, though, is that there are at least as many different opinions as there are people.
The opinion page is not just about the editors' opinions, or the columnists' opinions, or the opinions of the outspoken or powerful. The opinion page is about your opinion.
Of course you have an opinion. You care what happens to your university, your town, your state, your country. You care about what we print in The Post because it affects you.
Instead of just complaining to your roommate about the photo on the front or commiserating with the barista who makes your mocha about the university budget, take a moment and compose a letter to the editor. It doesn't have to be long or complicated, and you can submit it online. We do our best to publish every letter we receive, and anything that doesn't fit on Page 2 goes on our Web site.
The Post's opinion page is a public forum for discussion. It is a conversation among all of us. This is your chance to talk back, and we want to know what you think.
Log on to www.thepost.ohiou.edu to submit your letter, and let your opinion be heard.
