Softball: Blogs to follow season, players' personalities

The Bobcats are getting a different kind of hit as of late - web hits.

The softball team is attempting something new this season. Each week, one of the girls contributes a blog post to the Ohio athletic department's Web site.

These postings give the outside world a look at what it is like to be a Bobcat softball player.

After viewing the volleyball team's blog about its trip to Hawaii, assistant coach Jenna Hall had an idea of her own - a weekly blog chronicling the season.

Kelly Krueger had the task of writing the blog's first four posts.

I didn't really know what to write

Krueger said. I took mine and went with a general theme.

I tried to make mine kind of funny.

Krueger took readers through the Bobcats first few weeks of the preseason. From the preseason workouts and weightlifting to the arrival of the team's new locker room refrigerator the sophomore gave Bobcat fans an in-depth look at how Ohio prepared for the season.

Krueger then passed the torch to teammate Jill Viguers for her thoughts on the season's first action. The senior treated readers to a David Letterman-like Top 11 firsts of the season.

Included on the list were the team's first home runs first tan line/sunburns and a Bobcat's first plane ride ever.

It was fun to see and read about people's successes so early on, Kruger said. Even though it is about our team, it is still fun to read it.

You can see a person's personalities in them. It's entertainment.

Viguers agrees with her teammate's assessment.

It's something that the whole team can do

Viguers said. Everyone gets a different one every week.

It's really exciting and fun.

From Shalene Petrich's blog with bus-ride karaoke to freshman Jillian Van Wagnen's about the team's spring break activities

each girl adds their take on the previous week's happenings with their own unique style and humor.

This week's blog entry by Lauren Histed features even more iPod karaoke during those long bus rides.

It's fun to see what other people are writing, Krueger said. It puts a whole different spin on what happened during the week that you might not have noticed, but someone else did.

The blogs also have another purpose.

Along with promoting team unity

coach Jodi Hermanek uses the blogs as a recruiting tool

showing the fun and the close bond that the team shares.

(The blog) shows the team's personality and all the inside jokes that we have, Krueger said.

Viguers sees the blogs as an important tool.

Recruits and people who are interested in our team can read it and see what we are doing, Viguers said. It's really unique because I don't know another team that does that.",",2,Sports,Michael Lewis,27981a.jpg,Sophomore Kelly Krueger sits in the softball dugout yesterday
