Over 1,200 report Athens power outage

This is ongoing breaking news. This story will be updated as more information is acquired.

AEP Ohio is assessing customer power outages in Athens, after more than 1,200 customers reported a power outage around 1:30 p.m Thursday. The power outage is expected to be restored at 5:30 p.m.

AEP crew members investigated the site and determined the cause was a truck hitting a low-hanging communication line, which tangled with the power line, according to AEP media relations.

AEP does not have an update on when the situation will be resolved, but the crews are actively working on it, restoring electricity incrementally.

A map showing the location of the power outages stretches from uptown Athens to about 10 miles east.
