Software to allow more student input in roommate choice

Improving roommate selection is just one of the benefits of new housing software Ohio University will use beginning Spring Quarter 2009. -

especially during recruitment that they wanted to be matched by personal attributes Associate Director of Housing Jneanne Hacker said.

The department is creating a committee of students to develop a list of 10 questions that will be used to match roommates through personal preferences on overnight guests and studying, Hacker said.

We hope to better match students in hope of eliminating conflict that could occur

Hacker said.

The new program also will address concerns with the room selection process returning students have voiced to the housing department. The only current criterion that determines when a returning student is able to select a room is the number of credit hours earned at the end of Winter Quarter.

Students had expressed concerns that

for example

someone with a 2.4 GPA may be able to register before someone with a 3.2

Hacker said. We're reaching out to groups to find criteria so the selection process is fair and equitable for all.

The MyHousing Student Web Suite, as a part of the new software, will allow students to make changes to their meal plans online and have them take affect immediately. Previously, students would have to make any changes in writing and drop them off or fax them to Chubb Hall.

Students will also be able to view their housing-related charges online, Hacker said.-

Hacker said. We're excited about the implementation process. We believe it will provide better service to the student population a service they'll be satisfied with.
