The City of Athens issued a boil order at about 10 a.m. Thursday for the entire city, and the boil order is expected to continue through Friday evening and possibly Saturday morning, according to an update from the City of Athens.
The water main break occurred on West State Street in the main line going from the water plant to the Highland Reservoir.
The break caused OU to cancel classes for the day starting at 7:45 a.m.
Facilities Management and Safety ordered 75 Port-A-Johns for campus, according to a campus alert. Students in the residence halls were advised to use those instead of the toilets.
The email advised that toilets on campus might not flush if the specific building is affected, and that waste will remain in toilets until the water is back up and running.
Those who need access to restrooms can go to the Athens Community Center, according to the city's alert.
