Women's Golf: Coach labels confidence key for MAC Preview tournament

At one point during last week's Zippy invitational, Ohio's score was among the worst.

Individuals struggled, the team's score dipped, and it looked as if the Bobcats were set to finish at bottom of the leader board.

On the second day of the tournament, the tide changed for the Bobcats. The same team that finished the second round of the tournament with the fifth worst score in the field rebounded Tuesday and had the best team-round of the day.

All five Bobcats improved their scores from one day to the next. Sophomore Megan Weaver led the Bobcats and finished fifth overall in the tournament.

But the one thing that has plagued the team all season was a problem again.

It's all on the mental side and being consistent

said coach Kelly Ovington. Trying to stay consistent in our game is the issue that we had last week. It really wasn't one thing that went wrong; it was several things. I can't fix consistency.

As the Bobcats head into today's MAC Preview tournament, Ovington hopes to keep her team confident even when they make mistakes.

Hopefully they don't lose their cool Ovington said. It's all about recovering and not letting bad shots carry on.

The MAC Preview is, as the name suggests, an opportunity for Mid-American Conference teams to preview the course that conference championships will be held at in the spring. The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind., is hosting the tournament. Toledo is the host school at the event.

Ovington noted that the field at the tournament will be very challenging.

We're seeing a lot of teams here that are playing great on a national scale Ovington said. Western (Michigan) and Eastern (Michigan) both played great at Penn State's invitational the other weekend. We hope to soon be a team that competes on that kind of level.

Despite the tough competition, Ovington predicted her team will do well.

They have it

Ovington said in reference to her team's ability. They can do it if they remain confident. I look for Megan (Weaver) and Colleen (Lienesch) to do well here. Megan's been playing great all year and Colleen really stepped it up in the last round last week.
