Relocate day kicks off semester scheduling

Friday kicked off the first day of scheduling semesters at Ohio University in more than 40 years.

The relocate day allowed 127 regional campus students preparing to make the switch to the Athens campus in the upcoming semester register before priority registration begins in an attempt to ease the transition, said Jenny Klein, director of Bobcat Student Orientation and an Allen Student Help Center academic advisor.

“We think it is beneficial we have this many students register for relocate day and can take advantage of the 72 hours in advance,” she said.

With the switch from quarters-to-semesters, relocate day will be able to be held each semester rather than once a year, as it did during quarters, Klein said

“We believe it is going to be very helpful, particularly with understanding the new course offering schedule and numbers,” said Linda Lockhart, manager of communication for the Q2S transition.

The day involved all majors and was run similarly to freshman orientation that takes place in the summer. Orientation leaders and Allen Student Help Center staff assisted with schedule advising in the morning and the actual scheduling of the classes in the afternoon, Klein said.

Friday’s relocate day also marked the first time relocating students were able to register completely online and not have to fill out permission slips to be taken to Chubb to be physically enrolled, Klein added.

“Relocate day (was) designed to assist regional campus students as they transition to meet their academic advisors and learn about their last few years of their degree,” Klein said.

The Allen Student Help Center has remained a front point for the Q2S transition, offering daily assistance in scheduling and will begin full-time scheduling assistance at the bottom of Baker University Center this week, she said.

“A great opportunity for students to come ask general questions and make the semester scheduling process easy and understandable,” Lockhart said.
