Soccer: Two second-half goals lift Ohio to the season-opening win over Robert Morris

After a scoreless first half at Chessa Field on Friday, the Bobcat attack was determined to put the first goal of the season on the scoreboard.

Finally in the 51st minute, Bryce Hueber took a pass from Sydney Leckie and shot the ball into the top right corner of the net to get on the scoreboard for the first time in 2017.

One goal was all the Bobcats would need as they allowed just two shots on goal in the entire first half. Sixteen minutes later, however, Allie Curry scored from 20 yards out to give the Bobcats some insurance.

Ohio’s defense would continue to suffocate Robert Morris the rest of the way, as Ohio didn't allow a shot on goal the rest of the afternoon en route to the 2-0 win in the season opener.

Not only were the Bobcats able to beat a team they lost to last season in overtime, but they were able to dominate the Colonials, outshooting them 21-6. Ohio registered 10 shots on goal, while Robert Morris tallied just two.

The dominating victory was big for the Bobcats, as the team was able to put their disappointing 1-0 exhibition loss to Northern Kentucky behind them, in which Ohio only mustered one shot on net.

Following a poor performance in the exhibition game, Ohio found the not so kind Mid-American Conference preseason coach’s poll, which had the Bobcats picked to finish fourth in the MAC East. Ohio didn't receive a vote to win either the MAC East or the MAC Tournament.

But after dominating Robert Morris, Ohio (1-0-0) has some much needed momentum as Butler (0-0-1) comes to Athens on Sunday fresh off a double overtime draw with Notre Dame.

The Bobcats and Bulldogs will kick off at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Chessa Field.
