Scott Miller to play intimate show

With music described as alt-country and a dedication to storytelling lyrics, Scott Miller will share both his art and the stage with audience members Thursday night at Stuart's Opera House.

Miller will perform for a small audience of 75 at this backstage show, said Tim Peacock, executive director of Stuart's Opera House.

Everything will be onstage

Peacock said. The artist will be performing there and the audience will be on the stage in folding chairs. It's going to be a really intimate show with more of a coffeehouse feel.

Stuart's Opera House holds these backstage shows when it feels it's the best fit for the performing artist, Peacock said.

With some artists it's more appropriate to have an intimate setting for them to share their songs and stories Peacock said.

Miller, who has been writing songs since he was a child, sees the backstage show as another opportunity to share his music with people.

I'm always trying to ... invoke an emotion and get a song across

Miller said. I've played to thousands of people and I've played to a few hundred

but this sounds like an interesting setting for people to get up close and personal.

Being able to create this connection with an audience is the most important part of performing, Miller said.

When you write a song and people get it and clap after it

you've done your job

Miller said.

Miller gives his audience the chance to relate to the stories he tells through his lyrics, and that unique song-writing style is what attracted Stuart's Opera House to invite him to play, Peacock said.

Miller writes really good songs and has something to say

Peacock said. He's a mix between old school folk singers and the hipster folk singers of today

and that is hard to find.

While Miller has spent almost 20 years making a living through his music, he has no desire to abandon the road.

I get to make a living doing what I love; it doesn't mean there aren't crappy parts to it - it's like any job

Miller said. But I think I'm doing what I was put on Earth to do. I've always known I'm lucky that way.

For the people who attend his backstage show at Stuart's, Miller has one hope.

I hope they feel like they haven't wasted their time and they enjoyed the music

Miller said. If a song touches someone
