Though taking classes in Athens usually means having a much more relaxed schedule and more free time, many students find it hard to keep busy.
Because of the decrease in the student population, many OU facilities have shortened hours, which causes many problems for students who aren't used to things being closed.
Hours of operation at many buildings on campus - including Baker University Center, Hudson Health Center, Ping Center and Alden Library - are significantly shorter during the summer months. The change in hours is attributed to the number of students who attend over the summer. During Spring Quarter 2008, 15,222 undergraduates were attending class on the Athens campus, as compared with 4,457 undergraduates in Summer 2008.
Students preferring late-night study sessions are out of luck at Alden Library, which closes at 7 p.m. on weeknights, with the second floor Learning Commons remaining open only until midnight.
Hudson Health Center also runs on a shortened schedule, closing during the middle of the day and on weekends. West 82 in Baker Center opens for only two hours each weekday and The Front Room closes at 5 p.m. each weekday, with both remaining closed over the weekend.
Jesse Neader, a junior studying organizational communication and a self-proclaimed coffee person
finds The Front Room's limited summer hours frustrating.
By the time I get ready to study The Front Room is closed and has been closed for a good four or five hours she said.
Additionally, Ping, after being closed for two weeks, will be open fewer hours throughout the summer, and students who are not registered for classes must purchase a summer pass to use the facilities.
Sean Mahaffey, a junior studying history/pre-law, said Ping's summer hours make working out regularly difficult.
It's really cumbersome
he said. Normally
I work out late at night
after work and stuff.
