Kyle Hansen will be reinstated as Ohio assistant wrestling coach, Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said yesterday.
The decision comes after Hansen pleaded no contest on Tuesday to a charge of having physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
When Hansen was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol this past August, the athletic department established a written no-tolerance policy with him. But after deciding to construct a new code of conduct, Hocutt placed him on paid administrative leave for the duration of his legal proceedings.
Hocutt said that along with probation, the athletic department put sanctions in place that Hansen agreed to complete while on leave. Those requirements were fulfilled, Hocutt said, declining to go into further detail.
Coach Hansen understands that there will be no tolerance for other violations like the one we just experienced
Hocutt said, adding that he believed this decision was consistent with previous disciplinary actions.
The most recent case was Ohio football coach Frank Solich's drunken driving conviction over a year ago. University officials placed him on probation for the remainder of his contract and had him educate students on the dangers of drinking. 17
