Athens commissioner arrested on drug charges

An Athens County commissioner was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and drug abuse in Nelsonville this weekend.

Commissioner Mark Sullivan, 51, was arrested 10:55 p.m. Saturday night in Nelsonville near the main square outside of The Mine Tavern. Sgt. Edward Kurtz of the Nelsonville Police Department made the arrest. Sullivan was allegedly causing problems in the tavern and had been asked to leave, according to court documents.

Sullivan was charged with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of drug abuse, according to court documents.

Sullivan was taken to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail. He spent about seven hours in jail.

Disorderly conduct is a minor misdemeanor and drug abuse is a third-degree misdemeanor. Sullivan could spend a maximum of 60 days in jail and pay a maximum fine of $750 if convicted of both charges, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

I'm obviously disappointed

but until we hear from him I cannot comment on a personal matter like that said Commissioner Larry Payne.

Sullivan has been an Athens County Commissioner since 1998.

Mark (Sullivan) has gone through a lot of stress with the loss of his wife and the loss of his father. He's a single father. I'm hoping this will help him get his life back on track

Commissioner Lenny Eliason said.

Sullivan is scheduled to appear in Nelsonville Mayor's Court Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
