Grover damages will cost university $100,000

Ohio University will pay $100,000 for repairs to Grover Center, which could remain partially closed until the end of summer.

The $100,000 is part of an agreement with the Inter-University Council, an organization composed of Ohio's 15 public universities, said John Burns, OU's director of legal affairs. The consortium involves a pooled insurance group that tries to buy different types of insurance at a lower annual cost.

What is applicable here is the property coverage

Burns said.

The agreement requires OU to pay a $100,000 deductible on the building's repairs. The consortium then would pay the next $250,000, and the balance would fall to the insurance company, Lexington Insurance, he said.

Damage from a fourth floor valve failure occurred in the chilled water piping system Monday. An insurance adjuster will assess the damage, which mostly occurred in a single part of the building, said John Kotowski, associate vice president of Implementation and Planning.

The greatest impact occurred on the north side of the building G? the impact was to the office areas. Some classrooms have been impacted Kotowski said. In addition to classrooms there has been some impact on teaching labs and the WellWorks area.

An estimate of total damages has not been determined, Kotowski said.

University officials are assessing the damage as they clean out the building, he said.

I think we're starting to get our arms around what was lost

what is salvageable and what can be repaired

but I think we're still quite a ways away from that

Kotowski said.

Crews are working to clean the affected area quickly because of the nature of water damage, he said. One of the issues when you're dealing with water is dealing with it quickly

otherwise you're susceptible to problems with mold.

Although the cleanup crews are working quickly, the timetable for getting Grover Center fully repaired could last throughout the summer.

The process of putting Grover back together could take anywhere from the balance of this quarter to the end of the summer

Kotowski said.

Renovations will not start until the damaged areas are cleared.

The priority right now is to get all the wet stuff out of the building ' the dry wall

the carpet

the ceiling tiles that got saturated during the leak. Once that's done

they'll work on replacing and renovating the rooms
