Softball: Bobcats come home winless from Tennessee

Heading into the final road trip before their home opener next weekend, the Bobcats tried to improve their out-of-conference record but instead were handed four straight losses.

Errors were costly in Friday's game against No. 20 Tennessee, as four Bobcat miscues led to three unearned runs in a 6-0 loss.

Teams with big bats put you in pressure situations were you can't make mistakes

said Ohio coach Jodi Hermanek.

Ohio also struggled at the plate, recording only three hits as a team.

The Ohio bats stayed cold against Illinois State on Saturday as the Bobcats dropped their first game 10-2 in five innings.

A costly eight-run third inning doomed Ohio and was the difference in the loss.

Costly innings were detrimental to the Bobcats all weekend as they gave up four runs or more in an inning four times.

We have to work on getting the lead out and our pitching staff can't be giving up the walks Hermanek said.

Against Texas, in the second game of Saturday's double-header, the third inning was the difference again as the six-run frame propelled Texas to the 11-5 win.

Ohio pitching gave up 18 hits in only six innings of play.

The Bobcats finally got their bats working in Sunday afternoon's rematch against Tennessee, but didn't deliver with runners on base.

The Bobcats out-hit Tennessee 7-5 but only pushed one run across the plate.

We did too much thinking at the plate

Hermanek said. We need to not think and to just keep things simple.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the score was tied 1-1, but four walks and one error led to four Tennessee runs on only two hits.

Though her team went winless on the weekend, coach Hermanek said there is something to be gained from the losses.

We can break it down and learn from situation to situation

from inning to inning

she said.

Hermanek also said the team is ready for its home opener next weekend.

We're looking forward to getting onto our own field

she said. There we'll better be able to work on and refine our game.
