Halloween crimes could incur high costs

In the past two days, Athens Police Department received 16 reports of items stolen or broken during Halloween weekend.

Those reports included seven criminal damaging, five criminal mischief, two thefts, one burglary and one breaking and entering offense.

Ohio University junior Matthew Bridger reported that a man rolled an empty keg from Bridger's porch onto his parked 1998 Volvo at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, according to an Athens Police Department incident report.

The front passenger side door was dented and scratched, causing $300 worth of damage. The case is still under investigation, according to the report.

Bridger said the man who rolled the keg was upset because he had been asked to leave the party, according to the report.

Criminal mischief is a third-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine, according to

the Ohio Revised Code.

Businesses also experienced crime over the weekend. Employees at the Athens Quick Change Oil and Lubrication, at 161 N. Lancaster St., found the garage window busted and an undetermined amount of cash missing when they arrived at work Sunday morning, according to the APD incident report.

The case is still under investigation. The offender would face a breaking and entering charge, which is a fifth-degree felony punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

The principal of West Elementary School reported that unknown people damaged the preschool plastic sliding board located at the front of the building between Thursday and Monday morning, according to an incident report. The damage was valued at $200.

Maresa Cole and Tianna Santamaria, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, reported clothing valued at $122 missing from their Days Inn room, according to an APD incident report.

They returned to their room at 5:30 a.m. after the Uptown block party and found their door ajar. Santamaria went to the front desk and found the night desk clerk had given the key to an unknown female who said she was Santamaria, according to the report.

A Days Inn manager told Officer Robert Filar that the night desk clerk would reimburse Santamaria if the incident was his fault. Filar advised Santamaria she would have to file a civil claim, according to the report.

The case was closed without arresting a suspect, who would have faced a fourth-degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine, according to Ohio Revised Code.

OU senior Samantha Lilienthal reported that the right rear fender of her Honda Civic was damaged during a fight in front of her 94 Franklin Ave. residence Saturday evening, according to an incident report.

An unknown male was shoved into her car, causing damage valued at $150, according to the report. There are no suspects in the first-degree misdemeanor incident.
