The Ohio women's golf team will travel to mountainous Waynesville, N.C., in hopes of taking top honors in the Wachovia/Great Smokies Intercollegiate Tournament this weekend.
The Bobcats finished third in their initial tournament of the year and fourth last weekend in Toledo but are confident nonetheless.
Coach Jeff Hetler said it wasn't that the team played poorly in the first two outings, but that they just couldn't get everyone on the same page.
The team average is down to 311 this year
Hetler said. Last year we averaged 313. If we can just get four of them to play well together we'll be in really good shape.
Last weekend, junior Meredith Waterston was the team leader. Hetler added that her performance should give the team confidence going into this weekend.
I expect us to play really well Hetler said. The girls are back into the golf season groove and they know they can play well as a team. If we can put up four scores in the 70s
we'll be in great shape.
Hetler had nothing but good things to say about the course, which the Bobcats will be seeing for the first time.
This is a new tournament for us
Hetler said. I've heard it is a really nice course. The yardage of the course is less than what we are used to
and that should transcend into some low scores for us.
This weekend will mark the seventh installment of the annual tournament. Of the 24 teams visiting the par-72, 5,828-yard course at Waynesville Country Club, only four, including Ohio, are newcomers.
Host Western Carolina has claimed the team title each of the last three seasons and has boasted the individual champion in the last four.
Ohio is the only Mid-American Conference representative in the tournament and will be looking to play well against the plethora of unfamiliar opponents the tournament presents.
