The middle-aged invade Athens once again for Winter Parents Weekend this weekend. The main event this weekend features stand-up from comedian Mark Curry, known for his television program Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. The show is at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets cost $5 for students and $7 for general admission. The success of the comedy troupe Second City, who performed during the Fall Parents Weekend, prompted the University Program Council to invite another comedy act to Ohio University, said Chelsea Hamilton, a UPC spokeswoman. Since Second City went very well
we wanted another comedy act Hamilton said. We have had a lot of requests for comedians from students all over campus so it just made sense (to invite Curry to perform). According to the OU Web site, other events this weekend include: Ping Center invites its members to participate in a bench-pressing competition. For $5, participants will contend for first and second place prizes at 4 p.m. today in the Ping Center lounge. The Bob Marley Music Festival will showcase Reggae band Nuhu and a dance performance from Bodies in Motion. Vendors will sell jewelry, clothing, books, posters and Jamaican food. The free event will begin at 6 p.m. today in Baker Center Ballroom. The Laughter After Dark program today features comedian Vargus Mason. The free show will begin at midnight in the Baker Front Room. OU Women's Basketball will tip off against Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. Saturday in The Convo. Tickets are free for students and $12 for general admission. OU's non-competitive synchronized swim team Bobcatalina will perform their show Dangerous When Wet at 7 p.m. Saturday in OU's Aquatic Center. Tickets are $2 for students and $4 for adults. The play The Mineola Twins will hit the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Elizabeth Evans Baker Theater. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12 for general admission. To finish the weekend, a free wind ensemble concert, sponsored by the School of Music and directed by John Climer, director of bands, will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in Mem Aud. In addition to taking parents to the special events, another perk of having parents come visit is a decent meal, freshman Matt Frires said. To start off
Saturday we're going to get some food that I don't have to swipe to get and that's not scraped off the floor
Frires said. I'm very excited about my parents coming. It's kind of like having your home come to you.
