OUPD to offer ALiCE training

Though last month’s blue-hooded bandit did not fire his gun, the Ohio University Police Department is offering classes about how to respond to an active shooter situation

OUPD will be holding free ALiCE training sessions to the public on Feb. 18 and Feb. 27. ALiCE is a national program that teaches civilians how to respond to an active shooter situation.

ALiCE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and escape.

In the event of an active shooter situation, locking down buildings and keeping others open can be counterproductive, so the ALiCE program is more effective plan to keep campus safe, said Andrew Powers, Ohio University Police Chief.

“The purpose of the ALiCE training is to provide members of our community with useful guidance for responding to an active shooter situation,” Powers said. “Even if unarmed, people can still evaluate the situation before them and make informed choices about how to respond.”

Each training session will be will last from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Baker Theater on Monday, Feb. 18 and again on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
