There were an estimated 1,444,920 new cancer cases in 2007, according to the American Cancer Society. An estimated 559,650 Americans died in 2007, and of those deaths, 1,545 were children under the age of 14. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, falling only behind heart disease.
I am urging Ohio University students to take action by forming teams and participating in Relay for Life 2008. Relay is an 18-hour event at the Athens Fairgrounds on May 16-17, 2008. It is so easy to become involved; attend the next team captains' meeting (8 p.m. Monday, March 10, Morton 201), sign your team up online and begin raising money. The Web site even offers a preset email to send to friends and family so they can donate.-
