A taste of studying abroad

The Office of Education Abroad provided food from five different continents yesterday in hopes of attracting students through their stomachs.

The Taste of Study Abroad

held in Grover Center, consisted of 34 testing tables where students could ask about questions and try a foreign treat.

Lori Lammert, assistant director of Education Abroad, said the program wanted to get the word out about going overseas and make traveling more interesting by letting them taste food from the countries they could visit.

At the event, students could try food from five different continents such as manchego cheese from Spain, Ritter chocolate from Germany, Welsh cakes from Wales and Australian Tim Tams, tiny wafer cookies.

When I was in Wales my boss' wife made Welsh Cakes for me said Heather Irish, a returned student from a Wales program. She had an internship in the labor group office with a political group in Wales.

While Irish was there, she worked alongside assembly members and lived in young professional flat apartments. It was different but not enough to make me feel homesick

she said.

From Fall 2006 through Summer 2007, more than 903 Ohio University students traveled through Study Abroad to 40 countries. The top three countries visited were the United Kingdom, France and Italy.

Recently, more students have been interested in non-traditional places such as China and Australia, Lammert said.
