Local man gets 3-year sentence for sex crime

An Athens man pleaded guilty this week to one count of gross sexual imposition after having sexual contact with a minor.

Wayne K. Barrows, 40, took a plea agreement with the Athens County Prosecutor's Office Tuesday.

On Jan. 11, Barrows was charged with one count of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony, after he had sexual contact with an 11-year-old girl in November, according to court documents.

Barrows was sentenced to three years in prison and must register as a Tier II sex offender. He will be given credit for the 35 days he has already spent in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to court documents.

As part of the agreement, Barrows could have been given a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $10,000, which is the maximum sentence for a third-degree felony, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

All three years of the sentence are mandatory, according to the agreement. Barrows will also be on parole for five years after his release and is not allowed to have contact with the victim.

The earliest Barrows could be released is Jan. 11, 2014.
