Tunnel collapse closes part of University Terrace

A section of University Terrace remains closed Wednesday after the roof of the utility tunnel below it collapsed last Friday and formed a hole in the road.

Ohio University hired an engineering firm to assess the damage, but costs to repair the hole and a timeline to do so have not yet been determined, said OU spokesperson Katie Quaranta.

Northbound traffic on University Terrace at the Scott Quadrangle and Park Place intersection must take a detour.

Police officers are not directing drivers, but a campus map outlining which route to take is available online. It is considered the Athens City Police Department’s responsibility to enforce traffic, though the hole is located on campus, said Ohio University Police Department officer Kevin Frith.

The hole is covered by a piece of wood, so its size is difficult to determine, Quaranta said.

White barricades block about 15 feet of road between Gordy Hall and Scott Quad.
