Ohio University issued a response in the Ohio Court of Claims denying any responsibility for medical malpractice that resulted in a former student having part of her arm amputated.
Molly Millsop, of Vandaila, Ohio, filed a complaint against OU asking for $25,000 in damages after part of her arm had to be amputated due to an act of alleged medical malpractice by Campus Care, formerly Hudson Health Center, in 2007.
OU issued a response to the complaint Thursday denying any responsibility.
The claims stem from an incident that took place Sept. 6, 2007. Millsop attended the center three times that day with complaints of fever, headache, chills, body aches, vomiting, shortness of breath and right arm pain, according to court documents. The center diagnosed her with muscle strain and adjustment reaction with anxiety.
Later, Millsop called her parents, who took her to O’Bleness Emergency Department where she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating bacterial infection, according to court documents. She was taken to Ohio State University Hospital where she underwent surgery to have part of her right arm amputated.
Millsop claims OU caused great physical, mental and emotional pain to both her and her parents and permanent limit to her normal activities currently and in the future. Millsop’s parents, D. Scott and Nancy Millsop, also are listed as plaintiffs on the complaint.
OU denies any responsibility for Millsop’s injuries and claims her damages were caused by her own actions. OU also claims Millsop did not state a claim on which relief can be granted, according to court documents. OU is asking the court to dismiss the complaint.
The court has not yet issued a response.
