Mayor Paul Wiehl's road to re-election just got a little rougher.
Two candidates - an Ohio University senior and a former OU professor - have taken out petitions to run for mayor, according to Athens Board of Elections documents.
Republican Randy Morris, who lost a close race in 2009 for the Athens City Council 4th Ward seat won by incumbent Chris Fahl, became the first GOP candidate to enter any local race.
Morris is a 30-year Air Force veteran and director of membership for the National Business Incubation Association in Athens. He worked at OU as a professor of Aerospace Studies from 1994 to 1997.
The other candidate who has taken out petitions to challenge Wiehl is Democrat James Drake, Jr., an OU senior.
Wiehl announced earlier this month that he will seek re-election.
Candidates have until Feb. 2 to officially file their candidacy to be included on the ballot.
