Effective yesterday, Mayor Paul Wiehl appointed a new recreation director for the city of Athens.
Rich Campitelli, who was previously assistant recreation director, will oversee the Athens Community Center as well as the city's parks and facilities.
As recreation director, Campitelli said he plans to fill vacant spots on the staff and conduct an evaluation of the programs and fees. He also plans to conduct an overall evaluation that will look at the budget and possibly prepare it for the 2009 year.
While serving as assistant recreation director, City Auditor Kathy Hecht said his annual salary was $43,264. As director, Campitelli has been offered $50,000, Wiehl said.
Wiehl said at least five other candidates were interviewed, and most of them were pulled from within a 50-mile radius.I think he has a good grasp on what needs to be done in the recreation department as well as in the community center
Wiehl said at a news conference yesterday.
I've been here seven years as the assistant (recreation director) and I have a good grip on some of the needs and challenges in the department Campitelli said.
Campitelli has a bachelor's degree in recreation and a master's degree in physical education from Ohio University.
Wiehl said he is not sure if Campitelli's former position as assistant recreation director will be filled.
