Graduate Student Senate may weigh in on noise ordinance

Ohio University's Graduate Student Senate may take sides on the proposed noise ordinance that has pitted Student Senate verses the Athens City Council after hearing a presentation on the impact of the ordinances tonight.

Pat McGee, managing attorney for the Center for Student Legal Services, presented the new ordinance to the senate members.

The city of Athens was considering some of its ordinances as a direct result the recurrences of Palmer Fest last spring

McGee said.

Currently the noise ordinance is in effect from ten p.m. to seven a.m. Sunday evening through Friday morning, and between the hours of midnight and seven a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Under the new ordinance there would be no time period.

James Archibald, commissioner for African American Studies, said he supports the new noise ordinance.

I live close to Mill Street so I am near all of this he said. I hate the weekends because it is nonstop foolishness and this actually sounds like a good idea.

McGee said he wanted Graduate Student Senate to be aware of the new implications the ordinance could bring to Athens and wanted the senate to consider passing a resolution.

Should you wish to pass a resolution basically asking to adopt or not to adopt

(the city of Athens) would take that into consideration

he said.

A concern about the new ordinance is that neighborhood could use it to drive away students from moving in.

There seems to be a fear of students moving into the neighborhood and one way to diverge them is to file noise complaints against the student so they really know that they are not welcome in the neighborhood

McGee said.

Graduate Student Senate President Tracy Kelly said she is not sure if the senate will support or oppose the ordinance.

I would certainly like to be approached by some of the members who were interested in the subject

she said. It certainly depends upon how the body feels about the matter

how strongly they feel and then we can go ahead and create a resolution.
