Women's Basketball: Backup center making progress

Center Chandra Myers has already scored more points this season than she did all of last season and recorded career highs in points in consecutive games.

But she's not completely satisfied.

My goal actually is to be a rebounder

Myers said. I'm a little disappointed in myself the last couple (games) because I haven't had too many rebounds.

Myers has provided a spark off the bench for the Bobcats, scoring in five of her last seven games. She also had a streak of four consecutive games with six rebounds.

With an increase in playing time, Myers said she can feel her confidence level improving.

Going in and being able to score my career high has been great and it's given me confidence in my post moves which I've been working on and trying to improve on

she said.

Coach Sylvia Crawley said she is pleased with Myers' progression.

She's getting better and she's earned the minutes she's getting

Crawley said. Our goal was to get her ready for (Mid-American Conference) tournament time

and she is exactly where we need her to be right now.

Frederick nabs honor

Guard Rachel Frederick was named the MAC East Division Player of the Week yesterday.

Frederick averaged 14 points, 16 rebounds and 4.5 assists in Ohio's two victories last week. Against Kent State, she had a career-high 19 rebounds in the Bobcats' 75-71 overtime win.

I'm playing more of an inside game this year and that's just one way that I can contribute (to the team)

Frederick said following the Kent State game.

In Ohio's 87-74 win over Miami on Sunday, Frederick notched her league-leading 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

This is the second time Frederick has been named Player of the Week. She won the award the week of Dec. 18.

Turning it around

The Bobcats have won 15 games so far this season, which is their highest win total since getting 17 in the 1997-98 campaign.

Ohio has assured itself of a winning record for the first time since 1997-98 as well.

The current six-game improvement from last year's team is the largest since the 1999-2000 Bobcats won seven more games than they did the previous year.

Ohio did not have a winning streak longer than two games last year. This year, the team has had a streak of five wins in a row and two separate streaks of three wins in a row.

The facts speak volumes as to how much the Bobcats have improved, and the players have credited the team's resurgence to a new coaching staff and a new beginning.

The coaches have worked with us and gave us confidence from day one

Myers said. They're great motivators and put it in us in the beginning of the season that we can come out and be a championship team if we just work hard.
