A sheet metal workers' union has filed another lawsuit for underpaying employees against a construction company that worked with Ohio University.
The Sheet Metal Workers' International Association, Local Union No. 24, filed a lawsuit against Renaissance Roofing, Inc., in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas Monday.
The company worked with OU to renovate residence halls across campus.
The union claims Renaissance Roofing knowingly underpaid its employees, which violated the prevailing-wage law, while they were working on the OU Bush Hall and Johnson Hall Roof Replacement Project, according to court documents.
Renaissance Roofing, based in Cleveland, contracted with OU for the project. The union claims the company was obligated to pay employees the required amount but did not, according to the documents.
The union filed a complaint with the director of the Ohio Department of Commerce Jan. 18 for the same reason, according to the documents.
The union is asking the court to order the company to pay the workers their lost wages plus 25 percent of the required amount of back pay, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
They also want the company to pay a penalty to the director of commerce for 75 percent of the required amount of back pay and be prohibited from doing business for one year, according to the documents.
The union has a pending lawsuit against Midwest Maintenance, based in Piqua, claiming their workers were underpaid during the OU Shively Hall Renovation Project. The union is asking the court for the same demands they asked of Midwest Maintenance.
