Ohio House candidates chat with students, faculty

Candidates for the 92nd District in the Ohio House of Representatives urged Ohio University students to take an active role in choosing and influencing their elected officials during a forum last night.

Jimmy Stewart, the Repubilican encumbent, and Debbie Phillips, a Democratic councilwoman in Athens, came together in Bentley Hall for a forum organized by two East Green resident assistants to discuss the focuses of their campaigns.

We are now in the position to influence policy at a young age

Stewart said, encouraging students to work with elected officials.

Phillips, an Athens resident, also said it is important for students to build relationships with their officials.

You need officials you can talk to and express your feelings about issues Phillips said, also encouraging students to take interest in health care problems.

Students should find out about their health care coverage after they graduate, including whether they are covered in their parents' health insurance plans, Phillips said.

She also said Ohio needs to turn around the number of students who leave the state for college by making college affordable.

Stewart, a former Athens resident and councilman, said he wants to focus on creating higher education assistance for students and adults in needy families and creating jobs for moderate-to-low-income families. Stewart said that topic is especially pertinent in his district because OU and Hocking College are the biggest employers in the district.
