Vox, the college chapter of Voices for Planned Parenthood, is celebrating its second quarter at Ohio University with a benefit concert.
Vox will present Rock for Choice at 10 p.m. Thursday at Casa Nueva, 4 W. State St.
Flinch, Speakeasy, Unrest Depressants, Silent Age and Brad McNally will be performing. Admission will be $3 for people under 21 and $2 for people over 21. Vox will be selling T-shirts that read I (heart) choice for $12.
We are really lucky; Casa has been awesome
and all the bands are playing for free Ashley Feyedelem, executive chair of Vox, said.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Ohio. Planned Parenthood is a family planning clinic that does not turn people away because of inability to pay.
We hope to raise $400 to $500 to give to Planned Parenthood said Cara Finnegan, treasurer of Vox.
Awareness to the clinic being in the community and all the services they provide is extremely important
said Vox member Rose Donohoo.
Vox was created after eight women from OU attended the March for Women's Lives last year in Washington, D.C., with Planned Parenthood. They wanted to bring a pro-choice, women's issues-based organization to OU.
Not too many people know what Vox is
Finnegan said. We are not just about being pro-choice. We are concerned about women's issues both locally and globally. We are open to people's inputs
and we like new topics. We want passionate people to join.
Vox currently has 10 consistent members. Seven will be graduating after Spring Quarter.
We would like to see our membership grow to at least 15
Finnegan said. The more members we have
the more successful we can be in getting our issues recognized.
Rock for Choice is Vox's first large event. Previous activities included passing out fliers with suckers attached, once to encourage people to vote in November and again last month to celebrate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
Vox received $2,042 in SAC funding and is waiting to hear if the money would be granted. This money will be used to distribute safety whistles with lights on them, to purchase advertisements to promote Vox on campus and to make copies of fliers.
Vox wants to work with the Feminist Coalition and other women's issues groups on campus to raise awareness concerning women's health and safety, Feyedelem said.
Vox meetings are at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in Baker University Center room 327. Dues are $5 a year.
