Roofing company denies claims about underpaying

A roofing company contracted by Ohio University filed a response denying they underpaid workers while renovating two dorm halls.

Renaissance Roofing Inc., based in Cleveland, issued a response last week denying the claims of a lawsuit against them filed by the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association Local Union No. 24.

The union is suing the company in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas for allegedly knowingly underpaying union workers while working on the OU Bush Hall and Johnson Hall Roof Replacement Project, according to court documents.

The union is asking the court to order the company to pay the workers their lost wages plus 25 percent of the required amount of back pay, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Renaissance Roofing denies all claims made by the union and asks the court to dismiss the complaint with prejudice, which would hinder the union from re-filing the case.

The company claims the union’s complaint did not state a claim upon which relief could be granted and that their alleged damages are speculative and subject to offset, according to court documents.

The court has yet to issue a response.

The union has another lawsuit pending against Midwest Maintenance, based in Piqua, claiming their workers were underpaid while working on the OU Shively Hall Renovation Project.
