Toledo won a tight contest with Northern Illinois on Saturday, edging out the Huskies 20-19.
The Huskies (3-3, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) had a 19-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Rockets running back DaJuane Collins made sure the lead did not stand, and ran in the second of his two scores with the clock running down. Collins finished with 139 yards on the ground.
Rockets backup quarterback Austin Dantin threw for 202 yards and a touchdown.
Austin came in as a true freshman and really showed what he was capable of doing
Toledo coach Tim Beckman said. The surrounding cast he had with him that day made (him) feel comfortable being successful and do the things that he was able to do.
Huskies quarterback Chandler Harnish had two short-yardage scores and threw for 157 yards.
Bulls top Akron
Buffalo (3-4, 1-2 MAC) was also involved in a close game this weekend, matching up with Akron (1-5, 0-3 MAC). The Bulls benefited from two touchdown passes from quarterback Zach Maynard and won 21-17.
I thought our players responded extremely well to a game that went back and forth all the way to the end Buffalo coach Turner Gill said.
Our defense played extremely well: caused three turnovers did some good things
stopped them in the red zone twice and stopped them from scoring
and that was really the big difference in the ball game.
Receiver Naaman Roosevelt caught two touchdowns from Maynard in the victory.
The Zips used their ground game to find the end zone, getting a touchdown from Mike Ward and another from Alex Allen.
Elsewhere in the MAC
Standout receiver Freddie Barnes caught three touchdowns for Bowling Green, and continued his offensive ways as his team defeated Ball State 31-17. The Falcons' win extended the horrid streak for the Cardinals (0-7, 0-3 MAC), who have yet to register a victory in 2009.
Central Michigan (6-1, 4-0 MAC) met its cross-state rival Western Michigan (2-2 3-4 MAC) for a marquee matchup between two of the MAC's best passers.
Chippewas quarterback Dan LeFevour threw for 238 yards with three total touchdowns, and Broncos quarterback Tim Hiller threw for two scores and 410 yards.
Kent State quarterback Spencer Keith accounted for three touchdowns, and led the Golden Flashes (3-4, 2-1 MAC) to a 28-6 over hapless Eastern Michigan (0-6, 0-3 MAC).
