City Council denies apartment contract

Last night, Athens City Council members unanimously rejected an ordinance creating a development agreement contract between the city and the developer of Summit at Coates Run, a proposed Richland Avenue apartment complex.

Council members expressed similar concerns to those they've had in the past about the nearly 900-bed Coates Run, formerly known as the Campus Edge apartment complex. The large size of the development and the slip-prone soils on its plot were among their concerns.

City Law Director Garry Hunter said voting down the project does not mean council would kill the project

which is proposed by Columbus-based Edwards Communities.

Council has yet to hear the Athens Planning Commission's recommendation on Coates Run, said Councilwoman Debbie Phillips, D-4th Ward.

In other news, repair costs for a 60-to-80-foot section of Mulligan Road that collapsed Monday will cost the city between $57,000 and $226,000, Mayor Ric Abel estimated. Mulligan Road is south of Athens, to the east of state Route 682.

Abel said that an accumulation of water from heavy rains probably helped the soil collapse. After the road slipped, a waterline underneath also broke, Abel said.

It needs to dry out a little bit before we have a handle on it he added.
