It was a damp weekend for the Ohio men's golf team.
After shaking up the lineup this past weekend, the Bobcats tied for ninth with a 54-hole score of 917 (317-295-305) in the 15-team field that participated in the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
The first 36 holes were supposed to be played on Saturday but rain cut the second round short, forcing players to finish up the postponed round on Sunday morning.
Throughout the majority of the spring season, Ohio coach Bob Cooley has been consistent on which players play in tournaments. With the Mid-American Conference championship slated for next month, Cooley wanted to be sure that he had the best five players playing.
Junior Mark Cimarolli and seniors Brian Elsea and Jon Johasky were the top three performers for Ohio.
Cimarolli finished third overall with a 220 (76-73-71). Johasky tied for 17th overall with a 226 (81-71-74), while Elsea carded a 235 (77-76-82).
Cimarolli, a Pennsylvania native, was familiar with the Penn State Blue and White courses because he played at them while in high school. The third place finish was his second top 5 finish of the year.
Cooley expects to again change the lineup next weekend when the team travels to Akron for the Firestone Intercollegiate.
I thought Mark (Cimarolli) played pretty well and Mark (Phillips) had a good round
Cooley said. I think we probably will (change up the lineup). We'll just let the golf clubs do the talking this week.
Eastern Michigan won the tournament with a 892 (300-295-297). Korey Mahoney placed first overall with a 215 (68-73-74).
The Firestone Intercollegiate will be played on Saturday and Sunday. It will be the last tournament for Ohio before the MAC Championships. 17
