Indie and progressive rock to be a 'Strange Arrangement' at Jackie O's

The members of Strange Arrangement first formed a band in high school.

When college came around, the members went their separate ways for seven years, only to reunite and reform the band two-and-a-half years ago. They will be playing 10 p.m. tomorrow at Jackie O's Pub and Brewery.

Their music is described as indie mixed with progressive rock. The band members' personal styles and influences are even more varied. Joe Hettinga, 29, of LaGrange, Ill., listens to Phish, Wilco,My Morning Jacket and Herbie Hancock. Kevin Barry, 29, of Celarendon Hills, Ill., agrees with Hettinga on Wilco and My Morning Jacket. He also listens to Cool and the Gang, Pink Floyd and Miles Davis. The band is made up of Hettinga, Barry, Bob Parlier and Jim Conry.

Strange Arrangement loves playing in Athens because it has a very receptive crowd and is a great place for music. Jackie O's is a perfect venue for them because it is small and intimate. Hettinga, who plays piano and keyboards and does vocals, hopes that they can play there every three months or so.

It's just a great college town and a very enthusiastic crowd. The energy is pretty amazing

said Barry, who plays bass and does vocals.

Strange Arrangement plays music not just for themselves, but also for their fans. They want everyone to enjoy him- or herself and forget about everything else.

The band is currently working on building a loyal fan base, starting in the Midwest. They released their first album Side x Side in 2008, and are just starting to record new tracks for their second album, due by Christmas 2009.

Tickets for tomorrow's show cost $5 and can be purchased at Jackie O's or by calling ahead of time. The show is open only to those 21 and older. They will be playing alongside The League of Proper Musicians.
