Baseball: Ohio swept by Vanderbilt

The Ohio baseball team dropped all three games of its season-opening series against Vanderbilt.

No. 3 Vanderbilt beat the Bobcats 10-1 on Friday, and then again 11-1 and 5-1 in a doubleheader yesterday.

Snow followed the Bobcats, postponing Saturday's game and creating a twinbill yesterday.

It just makes for a long day

coach Joe Carbone said. We were out there at 10 in the morning and we got off the field at 7 at night. It's not like working in the coal mines you know; it's baseball.

While the change in schedule did not affect the Bobcats much, the hamstring injury outfielder Willie Walker suffered in Friday's game did.

It was a big blow to us

but it gave us a chance to play some more of our guys

Carbone said.

In Friday's game Matt Stiffler had two hits, and Hayden Johnston drove in the Bobcat's only run. Stiffler went 1-for-4 in yesterday's first contest and drove in Ohio's run in the eight-inning ball game. Zeke Isaacs struck out seven batters in the second game of the day.

Isaacs said he was pleased with the Bobcats' performance overall.

(Our performance) was satisfying because we worked so hard in the offseason and then we finally got to go out there and compete

he said.Despite the loss, Carbone said his team performed well against a tough team in its first game.

We didn't have anything going on offensively

but that is a direct credit to Vanderbilt's pitching staff

he said. We hung in there

but we need to make improvements in our pitching and our hitting.Based on the team's performances, Stiffler remains confident for the rest of the season and said that things for the Bobcats can only get better.

Starting out with a team like (Vanderbilt) puts things into perspective

Stiffler said.
