Instead of relaxing over spring break, the Ohio women's lacrosse team was busy creating some early season momentum with two decisive wins.
Coach Kate Brew said she was pleased with how the team has begun playing with confidence and up to their potential after a rough start.
The John Hopkins loss was a turning point for us; after that we realized that we needed to start playing to our potential
Brew said. Offensively we have been doing a wonderful job playing our game plan and doing what we have been practicing.
Even though the Bobcats (3-5 overall, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) did not visit any beach locations on their break, they did travel to North Carolina last Sunday, where they defeated Davidson 10-3 for their first ALC win.
The Bobcats enjoyed a game of balanced offense in which eight players scored and were led by midfielder Dana Dobbie, who scored two goals and dished out three assists.
Also scoring two goals was defender Katie Peksa while teammates Lauren Dansak, Amanda Diehl, Kristen Gombeski, Caitlin Link, Julie Roguski and Frannie Sullivan all chipped in goals that afternoon.
Spreading out our offense is something we really wanted to work on this year. Years prior we've had one or two girls scoring all the goals and not enough from the other players Brew said. This year we have been focused on all offensive factors.
After picking up their first road win, the 'Cats returned home to Peggy Pruitt Field and won their second game in a row with a 16-7 victory against St. Mary's of California.
Dobbie paced the Bobcats in her usual fashion, tallying five points on four goals and one assist. All her goals came in a 12-0 Ohio run which began in the first half and continued until 20 minutes were left in the second half.
The victory came easily for the Bobcats as they kept the Gaels to only one goal in the first half. Ohio played many bench reserves and they combined for five goals and three assists.
Freshman attacker Sullivan, who has scored seven points over spring break on two goals and five assists, said the two straight wins have helped the team rebound after the bumpy 0-3 start.
We kind of had a rough start early on playing some really tough games but we've been picking it up now and practices have been going really well
Sullivan said. I think we are playing with some more confidence now
and wins definitely pick the team up.
She also said she thinks the team's chemistry is coming together.
The team is gelling together now and I think we (will) finish the season off strong
she said. Of course Dana really stands out but everyone has really been contributing.
The Bobcats are off until Sunday when they will travel to New York to play Albany.
