Siegfred provides haven for cramming students

With numerous coffee cups, late nights, little sleep and an all around good time, art students labor to finish their final projects.

This coming weekend

I guarantee it will be packed with students here said Laura Basil, senior painting major. The final weekend before critiques

people will be rushing around to finish on time.

Basil spends 15 to 20 hours per week on her pieces. Her freshman year, she spent over 12 hours at Seigfred Hall at once because of procrastination. She has come close to spending the night in Seigfred, but hasn't totally camped-out yet.

Junior Olivia Thomas has spent 50 to 80 hours on her painting final.

Although some students work frantically as their final deadline approaches, others work steadily all quarter long.

It's not just a final project

but more of an ongoing process all quarter

Basil said.

Students need large amounts of time for some of their projects. Many students work for eight hours or more at once on them for days at a time.

Assistant Professor of Foundations John Sabraw said he tailors his final project assignment dates according to the class. If a class quickly grasps the subject matter, final projects could be assigned as far in advance as four weeks before its critique date.

Final projects for art classes are different than finals for other classes. Students spend hours memorizing information for subjects such as philosophy or political science, but the final projects for art students are a stage of personal development, which makes for a draw of students' time, Sabraw said.

This quarter, Sabraw assigned a final project loosely based around structure, he said. Students were open to use any and as many media as they chose. Projects could even use film or site-specific projects, as long as it was legal and didn't hurt anyone, he said.

Final projects for Sabraw's studio concepts class should last a minimum of two-and-a-half weeks to four weeks. Students should gradually work on the project each day to keep it fresh in their minds, he said.

In an effort to reduce thefts, Seigfred Hall began operating under new hours beginning in October. Monday through Thursday, the building is open from 7 a.m. until midnight. On weekends, the building closes at 8 p.m.

My biggest problem is that I put off work for other classes to do this work

said junior painter Danielle Anglin.

Even with loads of work to finish and deadlines soon approaching, students still find time to amuse themselves during cram time. While working on projects, two girls spotted a spider on the floor and proceeded to chase it around the papermaking room with brooms, disregarding their art projects.

It is good to put the hours in because you know that you have accomplished something when you are done

said sophomore Elliot Marquet as he paused from his ceramics project. When your head hits the pillow finally

it is well deserved.

Some art students suggested tips for others trying to finish a final project on time: Don't pull all nighters. Have somebody to talk to. Plan ahead. And drink lots of coffee.
